Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
